This paper reports how a university owned bus company has introduced a system of ‘smart’ ticketing, using electronic tickets loaded onto mobile phones. The paper shows how such ‘smart’ ticketing can provide a sustainable financial business model for small and medium sized bus operators. The technical issues encountered in developing the electronic tickets are described along with the challenges faced in implementing the system. Details of the market research that was undertaken are also given. A key objective of the project was to quantify the uptake of mobile tickets by different user groups and our findings on this objective are reported. A further objective was to use the experience gained during the project to inform strategies for mobile ticketing across a multi-operator bus network and a multi-modal transport network, and this objective is discussed and some conclusions are drawn.
