Overview

Carol Timson (FHEA) has worked as a Musician and Educator for the last thirty eight years. She is currently Senior Lecturer in Music Education and Collaborative Partner Lead for Masters Partnership Degrees (Teachers of the Deaf, SENCO and Executive Heads) at the University of Hertfordshire. She leads several modules delivering the music education component of PGCE, B. Ed, BAES, and School Direct programmes to all ITE students.  Previously, Carol worked as a Music Specialist in Early Years, Primary and Secondary Education. and as an Advisory teacher, County Music Inspector, and Ofsted Subject Inspector.  As Head of Music Education at Anglia Ruskin University she led two nationally innovative curricular developments with the establishment of a two-year Secondary B. Ed QTS in Music Education for ex-military bandsmen, and an Israeli Masters Programme in Music Education. She was a member of the National Executive of the Schools Music Association from 2002-2010 (now ISM) advising on policy.

 

As a researcher, Carol led the MSc in Practice-Based research programme at University of Hertfordshire. Her own research has focused particularly on newly qualified teachers, and on the training of generalist practitioners to teach music in the EYFS and NC in Nursery and Primary Classroom settings. A recent interest has been situated professional learning for teachers through a singing-based curriculum, focusing on in-class mentoring and coaching as an approach to teacher education. Her work currently involves consultancy and advocacy of music education both nationally and internationally.
