Overview

Dr. Darren Elliott-Smith is Senior Lecturer in Film and Television and the Subject Coordinator for Film in the School of Humanities at the University of Hertfordshire. He currently teaches across all levels in film, television and screen studies, he contributes to the online MA in Global Film and Television and the American Studies pathway. 

He has a BA (Hons) in Communication Studies (University of Sunderland) and completed an MA in the History of Film and Visual Media at Birkbeck College, University of London. He completed his PhD in 'New Queer Horror in Film and Television' at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2013.

Darren has previously worked as a Film Curator and Programmer for the BFI (British Film Institute), Mainline Pictures (Screen Cinema chain) and was the Film Manager for the Film Education Consortium for Hertfordshire (2007-a2010). As the Film Education Manager for the Film Consortium, Darren successfully created and delivered a programme of educational events, workshops and screenings for all ages, schools, colleges and the general public across Hertfordshire. Alongside this - he worked on collaborative projects with Cambridgeshire Film Consortium, the Cambridge Film Festival, the British Film Insitute and with UHArts (UniComics, and Kiss Kiss Kill Kill)   

His research to date is focused on representations of queerness, gender and sexuality in horror film and television and extends to experimental film, adaptation studies, the appreciation of cult and trash in the moving image and applications of psychoanalysis to horror and fantasy texts. Darren's research is also put into practice via several academic videographic film projects and video essays. He has published articles on his central focus of research for SCOPE: Online Journal of Film and Television, contributed to edited book collections for Palgrave Macmillan (Melodrama in Contemporary Film and TelevisionStyle and Form in the Hollywood Slasher Film), ECW Press (TV Goes to Hell: The Unofficial Road Map of Supernatural) and IB Tauris (Screening the UndeadTrue Blood: Investigating Vampires and the Southern Gothic) . He has contributed to numerous international conferences, workshops and symposia dedicated to horror, cult and LGBTQ film and television. His first monograph Queer Horror Film and Television: Masculinity and Sexuality at the Margins is published by IB Tauris (2016).

 

He is currently working on an co-edited collection with Dr John Edgar Browning (Georgia Institute of Technology) entitled New Queer Horror Film and Television - which considers the emergence of an 'out' sub-genre of Horror film and television that explicitly considers LGBTQ+ identities and concerns within each narrative.
