Prior to joining the University of Hertfordshire in December, 2013, I completed a PhD at the Institute of Education, London, in the subject area of adult and community-based learning for active citizenship. Inspired by my lengthy career beforehand as a housing co-operative development agent, and a community engagement consultant in housing-led regeneration projects, my research looked at the learning needs of those tenants in social housing, in England, involved in highly complex and contested processes of housing stock transfer. My thesis won the 2012 Building and Social Housing Foundation Knowledge Transfer Partnership Award, in recognition of its capacity to influence policy and practice in relation to this aspect of public service reform.

A qualified teacher in post-compulsory education, I have taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Birkbeck, Middlesex University, and the University of Hertfordshire. Whilst at Birkbeck, I and my colleagues in the School of Lifelong Learning won the 2009 Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Local Community, in respect of our community-based and work-based delivery of higher education learning modules.
