Research interests

My main researchinterests are in the areas of star formation, brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets.

For many years I have run 2 very large infrared surveys of our Milky Way Galaxy: the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey  (UGPS, see www.ukidss.org) and the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea Survey (VVV, as co-leader). The UGPS comprises data for 1 billion individual stars in northern and equatorial skies at 3 wavelengths. VVV is a time domain survey that covers a smaller area of the southern sky at 70 epochs and 5 wavelengths. VVV includes about 500 million stars in the part of the sky where the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy is located.

In addition to my survey work, I also use polarization and adaptive optics data to undertake detailed studies of individual stars.
