Description

Tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, and antibiotic resistant strains are an increasing part of this global health problem. It is essential that new drugs are developed to replace those that are no longer effective due to the rise in resistance.

This two-year project proposes to increase the effectiveness of a lead compound that, in preliminary research carried out by the University of Hertfordshire, has shown anti-tubercular activity against the Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) BCG strain. If successful, at the end of the two years it is hoped sufficient learning and evidence in the search for a new, highly effective compound will be generated to make the case for ongoing research, with the ultimate aim of promoting the new compound into clinical trials.
