Abstract

This paper argues that, from 'Sex and the City' through 'Game of Thrones' to 'Big Little Lies', the representation of motherhood in HBO series has gone from positive representation to regressive. Arguing that, in Adrienne Rich's terms the 'institution of motherhood' has gained ascendance while 'mothering' as affective labour has been driven away from the series emanating from HBO.
