Abstract

This paper presents the Youth Forum Wheel [YFW] that was developed following the undertaking of an evaluative mixed methods research study that was commissioned by NHS England and undertaken by the University of Hertfordshire, July 2015 - September 2016. The study examined the role of the NHS England Youth Forum [NHSEYF] members as well as the strategies that they undertook to influence health service provision for children and young people.

The data collection (Activity Logs and semi-structured interviews) and analysis led to the development of the Youth Forum Wheel [YFW]. The YFW depicts the ‘components of success’ that are perceived as being central to the success of a youth forum:
• motivation;
• commitment;
• community (the local area as well as a community spirit);
• funding;
• knowledge experts;
• youth workers.

The YFW has the potential to underpin the development and operationalisation of other youth forums.
