Abstract

The number of overseas tourists to New Zealand continues to increase although the 15.6% annual growth rate of the 1960s is no longer achievable, having fallen to 7.55% in the 1980s. Dr Stephen Page of the Department of Geography, Christ Church College, examines tourism in its economic context as New Zealand's second largest export in 1987. He considers how the industry can offset the effects of an increasing tendency for New Zealanders to take holidays abroad, plus competition from other destinations in South-east Asia and the Pacific, by implementing strategies to encourage overseas tourism, particularly from Japan. © 1989.
