CAR carries out research on a broad range of key science questions in astronomy.
Our research programmes mainly feature observational astronomy, and span the electromagnetic spectrum from X-rays to radio wavelengths. We study many sizescales, ranging from the properties of dust grains, up through stars and exoplanets through to entire galaxies and clusters of galaxies inthe near- and high-redshift Universe. Survey astronomy is a particularstrength. Our computing facilities also permit extensive in-house computer modelling and simulation, and we have a trackrecord of instrument development for astronomical polarimetry.
Our research performed well in RAE 2008, with the majority of our researchers rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
