Overview
I studied biology at the Urals' State University (Russia) where I specialised in plant ecology. After graduating I turned to mathematical modelling of ecological processes and did a PhD in theoretical ecology at Royal Holloway, University of London. My study was originally centered around modelling aphid population dynamics but I also got very interested in aphid movement when it appeared that aphid walking behaviour had a important effect on population dynamics. After completing my PhD, I extended my research to other groups of animals including cattle and wild grazers.
I have been involved in data analysis in various subject areas including modelling proliferation of lymphocytes, deriving equations for estimating height in adults from different ethnic backgrounds, understanding the effect of fungicides and resistance to pathogens in Oil-seed Rape, and exploring the relationship between the host species and egg size in Oriental cuckoo.
My other interest is in plant diversity, in particular, the effect of mowing on species composition in meadows.
