Dr Amila Jayasinghe is a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire. His research focuses on sustainable construction methods and optimisation of structural designs.
He was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Cambridge (Oct 2022-May 2025) for the EPSRC-funded project 'SHUTTERING' where he was exploring the use of participating formwork for shape optimised concrete elements, in collaboration with the University of Exeter. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge (Oct 2018 - Sept 2022) for the thesis titled 'Minimising embodied carbon in concrete floors'. Beyond research, Amila is an Accredited Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), has supervised visiting PhD scholars at Cambridge, and has mentored undergraduate research at the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka.
His contributions have been recognised through several accolades, such as being a finalist for the 2021 Adam Neville Prize for Best PhD in Cement and Concrete Research and representing the UK in the 2025 fib Achievement Award for Young Engineers. He was also a recipient of the Churchill Jafar Studentship during his doctoral studies.
