Personal profile

Overview

I am an extragalactic astrophysicist, specialising in the study of active galactic nuclei (AGN). I started my career in X-ray astronomy, doing a research project at the European Space Astronomy Centre near Madrid (Spain), followed by a PhD at UH, which I completed in 2013. I then carried out a range of research and technical work at the University of Leicester, before switching wavelengths to radio astronomy, when I joined the Open University in 2017. I re-joined UH in September 2024 with an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship, and I am currently working mainly with radio and optical survey data from LOFAR and WEAVE.

I have carried out a range of teaching, tutoring, assessment, and student supervision activities throughout my career, both face-to-face and in remote settings. I work on the environmental sustainability of astronomy, mainly as part of the Royal Astronomical Society's Sustainability Working Group and as part of the steering committee of Astronomers for Planet Earth.

Research interests

My current research covers the following topics:

  • Active Galactic Nuclei: morphology and cadence of the radio phase; fuelling, feedback, and co-evolution of AGN, host galaxies and clusters.
  • Accretion and jet physics: AGN accretion states; parallel with X-ray binaries; jet-environment interaction.
  • Astronomical data: X-ray, radio, mid-infrared and optical observations of AGN; multi-wavelength astronomical catalogue generation and cross-correlation.
  • Astronomical image classification: image analysis and classification algorithms; citizen science; machine learning.
  • Current and future facilities: particularly WEAVE-LOFAR, SKA (Square Kilometer Array), ESA Athena mission, Vera C. Rubin Observatory (LSST), ESA’s X-ray interferometer concept (XRI), NASA Lynx concept.
