Overview

Chathuranga Madhushan Wijerathna Basnayaka obtained his PhD in Informatics with distinction from Universidade Lusófona – Centro Universitário Lusófona, Portugal, in 2024. His doctoral research on Age of Information in Wireless Communication Systems advanced information freshness metrics, contributing to the design of efficient next-generation wireless networks.

He is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Cognitive Networks Laboratory, University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. His research focuses on AI-native, semantic-aware 6G systems across terrestrial, UAV, and LEO satellite networks, with emphasis on deep learning-based joint source-channel coding and adaptive semantic communications.

He previously held research roles at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and Universidade Lusófona. He also served as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Head of the Department of Data Science at SLTC Research University.

Research interests

AI-native semantic-aware wireless communication systems for 6G; deep learning-based joint source–channel coding; semantic communications across terrestrial, UAV, and LEO satellite networks.
