Research interests
Enric Vilar trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge and subsequently specialised as a nephrologist on the North Thames Specialist Registrar training programme. During his training period he completed a PhD supported by a Kidney Research UK Fellowship for dialysis-related research based at the University of Hertfordshire and the Lister Hospital, Stevenage. Enric Vilar went on to be appointed as Consultant Nephrologist at the Lister Hospital and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire in 2013.
His research interests centre around haemodialysis, include development of novel methods to adjust dialysis dose, energy and protein metabolism in kidney disease, techniques to enhance middle molecule clearance, and residual kidney function in the dialysis setting. He has an interest in statistical techniques and applied kinetic modelling in haemodialysis. His publications include studies into the beneficial effects of haemodiafiltration and residual kidney function. He holds a formal education role at the University of Hertfordshire as Research Tutor in Postgraduate Medicine and supervises PhD students in clinical research doctorates. He is an active Consultant Nephrologist based at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage and has clinical responsibility for the main Lister dialysis unit and is lead clinician for home dialysis.
Enric Vilar is currently Chief Investigator for a multi-centre study exploring the acceptability among patients of alternate-day haemodialysis funded by the British Renal Society. He is Principal Investigator for various other clinical research studies. His previous grants include a Kidney Research UK Fellowship and various project grants from Kidney Research UK and the British Renal Society.
