I am an artist working with sound, drawing and object making within the expanded field of sculpture. I use field recording as both sculptural material and a method of research to investigate landscapes in a state of flux.
The sites are chosen for their liminal qualities, they are edgelands and Terrain Vagues and sit, both geographically and temporally, on the edge of industry. My research into these sites encompasses historical, sociological, environmental and material aspects that help to understand how the landscape exists in our consciousness, an allegory of our psychological states. Beginning with field recordings of the site, there is an interrelation between drawing, object making and sound manipulation processes which form a generative material practice.
Current projects include a long-term research collaboration with artists, researchers, activists and the local community on the Isle of Man examining the ecological impact on our oceans through the writing of Malcolm Lowry. Through underwater recording I examine how coastal and marine architecture impact the marine ecosystems.
Recent projects include ‘Black Soup’ (2021-24) which investigated stagnant waterways, mud and amniotic fluid through field recording as a method of landscape drawing. And ‘Fore Main Mizzen’ (2018) which explored a ship wreck full of explosives in the Thames Estuary and included research into local gunpowder works, tidal erosion and impending doom.
I have performed live at Café Oto, Forma Arts and Media, TACO! Gallery and Whitechapel Gallery and have released sound works on Calling Cards Publishing, Continuous Tone, Eminent Observer and Sacred Tapes. I have exhibited in the UK and internationally including CAVE Gallery in Leeds, Caustic Coastal in Manchester, The Bomb Factory in London, The International 3 in Manchester, K11 Art Village Wuhan China and at the Maskenhuset in Grängesberg, Sweden.
