Overview

Ioanna is a Senior Research Fellow in Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire. She completed her PhD in Cognitive Neuropsychology at the University of East Anglia (UK) with an EU-funded Marie Curie Early-Stage Research Fellowship. She received a BSc in Psychology from the University of Crete (GR) and a MSc in Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (GR).

Research interests

Ioanna’s main research interests focus on patterns of convergent and divergent changes occurring in various cognitive systems (i.e., memory, visuospatial abilities, language, spontaneous cognitions) across the lifespan and in neuropsychological disorders.

A key focus has been the nature and mechanisms involved in the manifestation of cognitive phenomena that are mediated by spontaneous retrieval processes. For example, why does a thought or a memory pop into our mind unexpectedly; are there any qualitative differences between the autobiographical memories we recall automatically and effortlessly versus the memories we recall effortfully; do spontaneous retrieval processes change comparably to effortful processes in typical and in atypical ageing?

Another focus has been been the mapping between linguistic and non-linguistic representations of space in encoding, processing, and recalling visuospatial and navigation information from different perspectives. For example, is one’s ability to verbally describe and remember locations more closely related to verbal or visuospatial abilities, or both; and how does this ability change with increasing age or in dementia?

An earlier area of research has been the long-term effects of early-life experiences (i.e., stress) on brain plasticity, visuospatial abilities and behavioural manifestations after neurological insults.
