Overview
Dr Jesus Calvo-Castro is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Life and Medical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire. His research interests and expertise can be broadly divided into two distinctly different, yet interrelated areas. Firstly, the rational development of organic conjugated materials that can be exploited as smart systems in bio-optoelectronic applications, ranging from one- and two-dimensional charge transfer mediating platforms (J. Mat. Chem. C., 2017, 5, 3993-3998; J. Mat. Chem. C., 2019, 2029-2036) to molecules with specific subcellular accumulation (Chem. Eur. J., 2020, 26, 3173-3180, hot paper) and technologically relevant polymer architectures (J. Mol. Liq., 2022, 315, 118660; ACS Appl. Polym. Mater., 2022, 4, 6219-6228). The other main area of research is on the realization of innovative detection as well as characterization platforms for small molecule analytes of interest, particularly utilizing spectroscopic approaches (Chem. Commun., 2015, 51, 1143-1146; Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2020, 22, 25156-25164; J. Raman. Spectrosc., 2022, 1-17). The work of his research group also makes use of computational approaches, such as quantum mechanics calculations (J. Phys. Chem. A, 2019, 4, 3185-3193; ACS Omega, 2020, 28, 17223-17231) as well as chemometrics (RSC Adv., 2018, 8, 31924) and Design-of-Experiments (Mol. Syst. Des. Eng., 2020, 5, 1538-1546). He has delivered invited talks in the capacity of academic expert at the European Commission, United Nations and Interpol. His research has been externally funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund, Animal Free Research UK, the Chemical Structure Association and the Brazilian Government Agency for Research (CNPq).
