Overview

Dr Joseph (Joe) Hall joined the University of Hertfordshire in August 2021 as a Lecturer in Social & Cultural Geography having held Research and Teaching appointments at other UK Higher Education Institutions. 

Most recently, Joe worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield and University of Leeds (2018-2021) on a major ESRC-funded project entitled Living Gender in Diverse Times: Young People’s Understandings and Experiences of Gender Diversity in the UK. Joe has co-authored academic publications and contributed to a range of resources, and continues to publish from this research project and previous research which includes (Re)Connect the Nexus: Young Brazilians' experiences of and learning about food-water-energy

Joe has recently been Principle Investigator on a British Academy/ Leverhulme Small Grant entitled Negotiating difference: understanding how sexual and religious British values are being negotiated in
providing LGBT-inclusive primary education (2020-2022). This project represents on-going colloration with Professor Robert Vanderbeck, University of Leeds and Mark Jenett, Freelance Equality and Diversity Trainer. Joe is currently working on a number of research outputs from this project. 

Joe has experience of working with the National Education Union (NEU), schools, and education charities, including Inclusion For All. This includes undertaking consultancy work and participating in public engagement initiatives. Joe has peer-reviewed for over 10 academic journals and has co-edited journal Special Issues, including for Global Stuides of Childhood, Journal of Geography in Higher Education, EPC: Politics and Space, and is currently co-editing a double Special Issue for Gender Studies on young people and gender diversity. Joe is also an Editorial Board Member for the Children's Geographies journal.   

        

      

 

Research interests

Joe has interdisciplinary research interests in children, childhood and youth, education and schooling, gender and sexualities, (in)equalities and inclusion, and qualitative and mixed-methods.   

Teaching specialisms

Joe teaches on modules at all Undergraduate levels and also at Postgraduate level. This includes Cultural and Historical Geography, Geographical and Environmental Thought, Introduction to Field Research, Geographies of Exclusion and Marginalisation, and Urban Place-making (at Undergraduate level) and Study Skills (at Postgraduate level). Joe also supervises research projects and is a module leader at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. Joe is co-Ethics lead in the deparment and part of the Recruitment team.
