Overview
John Paul is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work and an Associate Member of the Centre of Research in Primary and Community Care (CRIPACC) at the University of Hertfordshire (UH). He is also a practicing mental health social worker Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) for a Local Authority in England and has significant expertise in mental health law, statutory mental health practice, AMHP decision‑making and Mental Health Act assessments.
John Paul is the Programme lead for the PG Cert Applied Mental Health Practice Programme at UH and the Module Lead for the Applied Mental Health Law module. He has a wealth of experience contributing to teaching on modules that critically examine mental health law, applied mental health practice, and professional judgement in statutory contexts.
John Paul is currently undertaking a part‑time PhD examining AMHP decision‑making in relation to mental health warrants under section 135(1) of the Mental Health Act 1983. His research focuses on the interface between legal frameworks and frontline practice.
