Overview

Joseph joined the University of Hertfordshire in August 2021 as a Lecturer in Social & Cultural Geography having held research and teaching posts at various UK Higher Education Institutions. 

Recently, Joseph worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds/Sheffield on the major ESRC-funded project Living Gender in Diverse Times which explored how young people in the UK today learn about, experience, and practice gender. Joseph has co-authored academic publications and contributed to a range of resources relating to this and other funded projects, including (Re)Connect the Nexus (ESRC/FAPESP) at the University of Birmingham/Leicester/Northampton and Radical Inclusivity/Exclusivity: Reconsidering ‘exclusive’ schools and their role within ‘inclusive’ education (Spencer Foundation) at the University of Hull.  

Joseph has most recently been Principle Investigator on a British Academy/Leverhulme funded project Negotiating difference: understanding how sexual and religious British values are being negotiated in providing LGBT-inclusive primary education and is currently undertaking a follow-on ESRC-funded impact project entitled LGBT+ inclusive education: overcoming challenges/objections and developing effective practice. Joseph is developing a number of research outputs from these projects. 

Alongside this, Joseph has been a consultant for the National Education Union and the Wales Centre for Public Policy, and has presented research at international academic conferences and professional and public engagement events, including the Sex Education Forum.         

Joseph has peer-reviewed for over 10 academic journals and has co-edited journal Special Issues, including for the Journal of Geography in Higher Education and EPC: Politics and Space and has recently co-edited a double Special Issue for Gender Studies.    

        

      

 

Teaching specialisms

Joseph teaches on modules at all undergraduate levels and also at postgraduate level. This includes Contemporary Human Geographies and Inequalities in Society and Environment (Module Lead), and Introduction to Field Research and Urban Place-making (at undergraduate level) and Study Skills, Research Methods, and project supervision (at postgraduate level).
