Personal profile
Overview
Dr Kyriacos Michael is a senior lecturer in songwriting and composition at the University of Hertfordshire, teaching across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Professionally known as TheKLMmusic, he is a multi-instrumentalist and an accomplished composer, songwriter, performer, musical director, and academic, with a richly interconnected portfolio spanning music performance, education, and research.
Deeply rooted in contemporary and popular music, Kyriacos has composed for a wide range of production music libraries, with clients including BoohooMan, BBC, EdgeSport, the Discovery Channel, and the community-focused Cares Family. His work is published by respected companies such as SATV, Cinephonix, and Evolution Media.
As a performer and artist, he has founded six original bands, releasing two albums with the acclaimed Nova Neon, an EP with the genre-blending Box Kid, and is now focused on his latest future-music project, elo-creek. A career highlight includes recording an immersive audio experience at the legendary Abbey Road Studios—a unique collaboration between Nova Neon and the University of York’s research department.
In education, Kyriacos delivers modules in songwriting, composition, performance, arranging, research practice, and music theory. He is also the driving force behind events such as HertsLive and the annual SonicHerts Festival. Beyond the university, he contributes to the wider academic community as External Examiner for Waterbear and serves as a consultant for Point Blank Music School and BIMM.
Having recently completed his PhD, Kyriacos continues to expand the field of immersive music performance. His research—outlined in the paper Towards a Taxonomy of Immersive Music Performance—explores how proximity, envelopment, sound and visual processing, and audience engagement intertwine to shape immersive experiences in live settings.
