Overview
Dr. Mohamad Reza Shahabian Alashti is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Robotics Research Group , specializing in Robotics and Deep Learning, at the University of Hertfordshire(UK). His work focuses on advancing healthcare technologies through robotics, machine learning, and human activity recognition, particularly in ambient assisted living and assistive technologies. He is currently contributing to two major projects: the SWAG (Soft Wearable Assistive Garment) project, funded under the European Horizon program, and the “Hospital at Home” project, supported by the NHS. These projects aim to integrate robotics and artificial intelligence into real-world healthcare systems, providing innovative solutions for rehabilitation and home-based care.
He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Hertfordshire, where his research addressed human activity recognition in assisted living scenarios. His academic journey includes a Master’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, focusing on medical image segmentation for spinal cord injury detection, and a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering. He has an interdisciplinary background, combining expertise in robotics, deep learning, and industrial automation, which enables him to bridge academic research with practical applications.
In addition to his academic research, he has experience in robotics and industrial systems. As a Mechatronics Designer at SYNTECH, he led the design and implementation of a 7-DOF robotic arm, developed power management systems, and integrated robotic platforms with advanced operating systems like ROS and Linux. His contributions also include participating in international robotics competitions such as RoboCup and IranOpen, achieving multiple top rankings. His industrial expertise further extends to his role as a Senior Software and Hardware Design Engineer at ARTA Vision Ava Engineering(AVA), where he spearheaded projects in web-based monitoring systems, industrial automation, and power infrastructure solutions.
Research interests
Dr. Shahabian has experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Hertfordshire, including Research Methods and Advanced Research Topics. He has also supervised final-year dissertations and research projects, guiding students in areas such as robotics, machine learning, software engineering, and cloud computing.
In addition, he has delivered modules on Cloud Computing Systems with AWS, including Problem Solving and Programming, Principles of Computer Systems, and Serverless Web Applications at CU London.
