Research interests

Professor Ornella Corazza, Ph.D holds the Chair in Addiction Science at the Department of Clinical, Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences, where she leads multidisciplinary research in the field of drug and other behavioural addictions. Results of her work have been presented in over hundred peer-reviewed publications, seven books, including the recent Novel Psychoactive Substances: Policy, Economics and Drug Regulations (Springer 2017) The Handbook of Novel Psychoactive Substances (Routledge 2018), Emerging Drugs in Sport (Springer 2021), and numerous invited lectures and media appearances. Much of her time is spent lecturing at conferences and teaching medical postgraduate students, psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health professionals, and others about behavioural addictions, internet addiction disorder, the neurobiology of addiction, body image-disorders. She currently supervises five PhD students with a record of 16 successful completions. Her academic achievements have been recognized with various prizes and award nominations, including the prestigious European Health Award 2013. Professor Corazza is the President of the International Society for the Study of Emerging Drugs (ISSED) and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal for Emerging Trends in Drugs, Addictions, and Health (Elsevier). She is a co-opted member of the Internet-Facilitated Drug Markets Working Group for the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) and serves as an expert advisor for national policy makers as well as international organisations (United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime; European Monitoring Agency for Drug and Drug Addictions, World Anti-Doping Agency). The basic theme of her research is to find out new strategies to overcome addictions in society, while promoting multidisciplinary approaches and international cooperation for a major global impact on citizens’ health and security.
