Overview
Purvesh is a Lecturer in Sustainable Urban Futures at the University of Hertfordshire, where he leads and delivers teaching on both undergraduate and postgraduate architecture programmes. Since 2014, he has combined teaching, research, and consultancy in the fields of sustainable architecture, building performance, and urban resilience.
His academic career began at Birmingham City University as a Zero Carbon Design Tutor, before joining the University of Hertfordshire in 2018. There, he developed a unique Master’s-level module on the Architecture programme, Sustainable Urban Futures, aligning it with critical RIBA and ARB learning outcomes. Alongside his academic role, Purvesh has served as a Research Associate and Net Zero Consultant, working with local authorities such as Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council to produce strategic pathways for delivering net-zero homes in line with the UK government’s 2050 mandate. This work attracted national media attention, including coverage by the BBC.
Purvesh's research domains span nature-based design, natural construction materials, circular economy in construction, Cellular Automata applications in design, and human-centric urban resilience strategies. His PhD research focused on the development of bottom-up, nature-based thermal insulation design approaches that can be adapted for multiple geo-climatic zones.
He has contributed to projects funded by UKRI, Climate KIC, and Research England, as well as internally funded university initiatives. His publications include articles and papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences such as Sustainability and Frontiers, and conference papers presented at IBPSA Building Simulation and the Nordic Passive House Conference.
Purvesh's teaching philosophy integrates research-led content, encouraging students to engage critically with environmental challenges and develop practical, industry-ready design solutions. His contributions to student learning and research culture at the University of Hertfordshire have earned him a nomination for the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Awards.
