Research interests
I work primarily in the philosophy of mind. My main interest is in reconciling scientific accounts of matter and the brain with what we glean from the personal perspective. Specifically: in consciousness we vividly experience qualities, for instance colours, yet colours play no explanatory role, indeed are not mentioned, in physics or neuroscience. As far as the sciences of matter and brain are concerned, colours are absent from the picture. Yet if we are material beings, colours have some sort of home in the brain. Understanding just how this is so calls for a deep re-think of the relationship between third-person and first-person data. I work on integrating the qualities of experience with the objective world as described by the sciences, to give a synoptic view of our place in the world.
