Shaw is an international historian specialising in the post-1945 period. He was educated at the Universities of Leeds and Oxford, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has been an Associate Fellow at Oxford's Rothermere American Institute and a Visiting Professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He has been a historical consultant for televison and radio in the UK, USA and Canada.
Shaw has written six books. He has written extensively on 20th-century international propaganda, on the modern history of the Middle East, and on the Cold War.
Shaw's latest book, written with Giora Goodman, is the first history of the 'special relationship' between Hollywood and Israel. It reveals the on and off screen roles that entertainers like Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Vanessa Redgrave, Steven Spielberg and Natalie Portman have played in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Shaw is currently working on two projects. The first is an international history of football during the Cold War. The second investigates the British Foreign Office's Cold War clandestine propaganda agency, the Information Research Department.
