Vid Irsic is an astrophysicist working in fields of cosmology, galaxy formation and astro-particle physics, with empahsis in large-scale structure evolution. As of February 2025 he is a Senior Lecturer based at the Center for Astrophysics Research at the University of Hertfordshire. Prior to this, he was IFPU Fellow at Scoula Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Italy (2024-2025), Kavli Senior Fellow at Kavli Institute for Cosmology and Cavendish Laboratory at University of Cambridge (2019-2024), Research associate at Department of Astronomy at University of Washington in Seattle (2016-2019) and Postdoctoral researcher at International Centre for Theortical Physics (ICTP) in Italy (2013-2016). Irsic obtained his PhD (2010-2013) and undergraduate studies (2006-2010) from University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.
Irsic leverges observational data and large computer simulations for cosmological parameter inference using Bayesian inference framework. Much of his work spans wide areas such as the nature of dark matter (e.g. warm-dark matter and ultra-light axions), inflationary physics (e.g. primoridal magnetic fields and isocurvatore fluctuations), black hole feedback process effects on cosmological observations (e.g. AGN feedback impact on weak lensing or Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects), and precision cosmology with large survey data. Irsic is a long-time developer of large numerical simulations (e.g. Sherwood-relics, xFABLE) with expertise in usage of HPC facilities. He is also a member of several international collaborations including DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument), WEAVE (Wide-field, multiplexed, spectroscopic facility) and WST (Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope).
