Overview

Yichuang Sun received a PhD degree from the University of York, UK in 1996. He is Professor of Communications and Electronics (since January 2001), Head of Communications and Intelligent Systems Research Group, and Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. Professor Sun's research expertise and interests are in the integration of communications, electronics and computing. He has been conducting active research in wireless and mobile communications, 5G and 6G technologies, RF systems and circuits, analogue and mixed-signal circuits, memristor circuits and systems, neural networks, machine learning, and neuromophic computing. He has published over 420 papers in peer reviewed journals and conferences and contributed 10 chapters in edited research books. He has also published 5 text and research books: Continuous-time Active Filter Design, CRC Press, USA, 1999, Design of High frequency Integrated Analogue Filters, IEE Press, UK, 2002, Wireless Communication Circuits and Systems, IET Press, 2004, Test and Diagnosis of Analogue, Mixed-signal and RF Integrated Circuits - the Systems on Chip Approach, IET Press, 2008, and Machine Learning in Communication Systems and Networks, MDPI, 2024. He has supervised over 35 PhD students and research fellows and over 25 visiting scholars and fellows from across the world.

Professor Sun serves on several Technical Committees of IEEE Circuits & Systems Society and IEEE Communications Society. He has been/is Book Series Editor of an IEE book series, Editor of 8 IEEE and international journals and sole or lead Guest Editor of 12 IEEE, IEE/IET and other journal special issues or topics. He has been on the technical/scientific programme committee of numerous IEEE and international conferences in various roles such as Track Chair, Organiser of Special Sessions, TPC Member and Session Chair. He is a referee for many book publishers, IEEE and international journals and conferences. He has also been an evaluator or panel member of research grant proposals for ERC (Synergy Grant), EPSRC, Royal Society, Austrian, Finnish, Dutch, Singapore and Canadian research councils, and technology patents for USA and UK organisations. He has been evaluator of Canada Research Chairs and professorships for universities in USA, Canada, Ireland and the UK, including Minnesota, McGill, Toronto, and Dublin. He has been an external PhD examiner for many universities worldwide including Imperial College, UCL, Southampton, Queen Mary, McGill, Melbourne, La Trobe, and Nanyang Tech. He has also been/is an external examiner of several UK universities including the University of Oxford and Queen Mary University of London for their undergraduate programmes. Professor Sun has been awarded many national and international awards, prizes and honours.

6G and 5G mobile communications, RIS aided radio communications, machine learning for wireless communications, green communications and wireless energy harvesting, secure communications and physical layer security, millimeter wave and THz communications, MIMO and massive MIMO communications, space-time coding and spatial multiplexing, multiuser and multicarrier communications, cooperative and relay communications, cognitive radio communications, IoT and sensor networks.

RF and Microelectronic Circuits, Devices and Systems

RF and mmWave communication circuits, energy harvesting and power electronic circuits, biomedical circuits and systems, analogue and mixed-signal circuits, analogue filters and amplifiers, power amplifiers, impedance matching networks, antenna tuning circuits and systems, reconfigurable analogue and RF circuits, data converters and Sigma-Delta modulators, analogue and mixed-signal test and diagnosis, sensors and instruments, memristor circuits and systems, memristive logic and memory.

Neuromorphic Computing, Machine Learning and Neural Networks

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, neuromorphic computing, and bio-inspired optimisation for communications, image processing, IoT, smart grid, and intelligent transportation systems.
