Personal profile

Overview

Dr Yuen-Ki Cheong has joined the University of Hertfordshire since 2015. Yuen-Ki completed her PhD at Queen Mary University of London and was awarded Chartered status in 2012 by the RSC. Over the years, Yuen-Ki has worked on multiple cross-disciplinary research projects involving mechansitic studies and structure analyses for applied materials.

Yuen-Ki’s current research is focused in the development of Antimicrobial nanoparticle filters for water, air and breathing systems. This work exploits antimicrobial nano-formulations, which are made suitable for facbrications into polymeric fibres and for various manufacturing processes. In order to validate the quality and efficacies of the antimicrobial fibre mats, a range of qualitative (i.e. SEM, TEM etc) and quantitative (i.e. ICP, NTA, leaching & Biological assays etc) techniqus are routinly used to analyse the applied materials. These techniques are also used to investigate the cellular interactions, physiochemistry and degradations of substances.

Yuen-Ki's reesearch extends to the applications of a novel class of medically related compound called ‘Trisphosphonate’, where their chemical structures and syntheses were first published in 2014 (Taylor & Francis). These newly developed compounds fall in to the same category of a type of drug called the ‘Bisphosphonate’, which is known as the first-line treatments for many bone diseases, skeletal complications involving excessive bone resorption and hypercalcimia associated with bone malignancy. Research papers published in Neurochemical Research (2015) and General Medicine Open (2017) had demonstrated that Trisphosphonates have great potential in both neuro- and osteo- protections.
