Description

Lung diseases are a growing burden on societal health and have severe impacts on the quality of life of those living with them. Although the treatment of breathlessness is achieved well by modern inhalers, really addressing and repairing the underlying disease processes in the lung is an unmet challenge requiring new, innovative drug therapies. Getting these new drugs to the parts of the lung where they need to act (known as inhaled drug delivery) is challenging using traditional inhalers. A new generation of inhaler devices called soft mist inhalers are being developed, which are particularly effective at delivering drugs in aerosols deep into the lung. In this project, the science of how to engineer the inhaler device to deliver a range of emerging drug product types will be explored. This provides an opportunity to really unlock the potential of new biological therapies, like vaccines for the fight against lung infections, as well as therapies that target gene function within the lung. The project provides an exciting opportunity to establish a platform that can bring emerging therapies from pharmaceutical R&D into the clinic, and begin to address the burden of lung disease.
