Project Details
Description
This ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) project culminated in the AMR Parliamentary Roundtable, held at the House of Commons, Westminster, on 18 May 2026. The project translated antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research into evidence-informed parliamentary policy by bringing together parliamentarians, representatives from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), professional bodies, researchers, clinicians, patient advocates and other stakeholders. Building on previous parliamentary evidence submissions, published research and stakeholder dialogue, the Roundtable identified priorities for strengthening implementation of the UK National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance. Discussions were structured around antimicrobial stewardship, One Health, diagnostics and responsible AI, innovation, and research–policy translation. The project produced three principal knowledge exchange outputs: a Policy Brief, a Supporting Evidence Report, and a Public Summary, providing evidence-informed recommendations to support parliamentary engagement, policy development and future implementation activities.
Layman's description
The project brought together experts, healthcare professionals, policymakers and patient representatives at the UK Parliament to discuss how research on antimicrobial resistance can be translated into practical policy. The discussions resulted in publicly available reports and recommendations to support action on keeping antibiotics effective for future generations.
Key findings
The Roundtable concluded that the UK's principal challenge is no longer generating evidence but implementing existing evidence effectively. Five priorities were identified: strengthening antimicrobial stewardship as routine professional practice; operationalising One Health; improving diagnostics, interoperable data and responsible artificial intelligence; sustaining antimicrobial innovation and regulatory pathways; and establishing a permanent Research–Policy–Practice Interface to support implementation and accountability.
