Description

This application is concerned with advancing current understanding behind the deliberate placement and concealment of stoneware bottles and glass as ‘witch bottles’ in the mid to late 17th–century England. Reflecting the beginning of a new and idiosyncratic form of popular magic specific to certain parts of the country during this time period, these vessels served as objects for ritual protection or as the containers of a prepared cure against witchcraft.
