British Theatre of the First World War and after: The Silver Cord by Sidney Howard (1926)

This project comprises archival research and writing about post-First World War theatre (1918-c1930) combining it with live professional performance through creative collaboration with a
renowned professional theatre (e.g. the Finborough). It wrediscovers important but forgotten plays and introduces them to modern audiences. The project also seeks to show ways in which theatre engaged with new ideas e.g. in the current proposed production, the 1920s popularisation of Freudian ideas; the rejection of Victorian ideas of the family; changing women’s roles [career versus motherhood]. It demonstrates how these issues were presented to the public in surprisingly complex and modern ways.
