Description
This is an application for a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship in order to write a book that reacts against the current trend to put consciousness first when it comes to philosophical theories about the mind. Exploring the nature and role of unconscious mental contents in sensing, thought, and selfhood, I argue that a broadly Freudian model of the mind as mostly unconscious can in this way be rehabilitated, fruitfully applied to many mental phenomena, and defended against prominent objections.
