Democratising Cultural Production: Knowledge Exchange and Prison

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Building on the previous run of this project made possible by the IAA Award we hope to create a permanent film studio in the Downview. This will facilitate film as a creative method able to explore relationships between film practice, class and the wider society. Access to the means of representation is denied the working classes in general but is particularly true of those imprisoned. Within the space created by this project prisoners make their own films, reauthor the narratives of their lives, provide evidence of experiences inside and outside of prison and
challenge assumptions of working-class people, working class life and those serving prison sentences.
