Description

Alcohol problems are common and increasing in East London, partly due to an increase in private, often hidden, use in the local Bangladeshi/Pakistani community. The best ways to help alcoholics are unknown. Liver disease is common in alcohol misusers but few liver and addiction specialists collaborate. We think a combined approach to alcohol misuse is likely to be successful.
Exercise helps depressed people. Some people have looked at exercise in people who abuse alcohol and, although the benefits were small, some people did reduce their alcohol intake. These studies focussed on people drinking large amounts and we think exercise may be more helpful to people who are drinking smaller amounts. We will offer an exercise programme and counselling to
different groups of people with alcohol problems to see if we can identify those who will benefit. We will then set up a national trial to confirm our findings.
