GUIDE Framework for Evidence-Based Antibiotic Prescribing: Global Implementation Through South Centre, using WHO AWaRe and UKHSA guidelines

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Development and global implementation of the GUIDE Framework (Gather, Urgency, Identify, Define, Evaluate) - a five-step clinical decision-support model for antimicrobial stewardship across healthcare systems.

The framework integrates WHO AWaRe classification, Start Smart Then Focus principles, and One Health approaches to standardize antimicrobial prescribing practices and combat antimicrobial resistance globally.

Being implemented across 55+ United Nations member states through South Centre (Geneva) consultation and World Health Organization partnerships, with policy dissemination through webinar series, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025 activities, and national antimicrobial stewardship programme integration.

The GUIDE Framework directly informs antimicrobial resistance policy at international, national, and institutional levels, translating evidence-based research into actionable clinical and policy guidance for healthcare systems worldwide.

Layman's description

The GUIDE Framework is a simple five-step guide that helps doctors, nurses, and pharmacists make better decisions about prescribing antibiotics. By following these steps, healthcare professionals can ensure patients get the right antibiotic at the right time while preventing antibiotic resistance - a major global health threat. The framework is being adopted by over 55 countries through partnerships with international health organizations including the World Health Organization.
