Project Details
Description
Continued improvements in aircraft performance using conventional propulsion devices, such as gas turbines, reciprocating engines, and electric motors will require continued, incremental improvement in turbine and propeller performance. Pertinent factors will be thrust to weight ratios, deformation under mechanical and thermal stress, and improved fatigue characteristics. This will be driven by new blade geometries and arrangements, new materials, as well as manufacturing methods that support novel materials and structures. Such developments will also need to be made with consideration of the needs for reducing the environmental cost of manufacture and for better sustainability in product design.
