Looking at music? Using visual methods to document sound

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

In collaboration with Prof Stephen Morris, Department of Physics, University of Toronto, we photographed early analogue physics experiments (Faraday instability and Chladni plates) for source material to use in a new audio-visual composition 'Faraday Waves'. The new work will form part of a new concert series 'Ritual' - a programme of works examining 'old technology' by bringing it to a new audience through performance.

Layman's description

An examination of wave patterns found on plates or water and oil vibrated by sound.

Key findings

Photographs and video of Chladni plates and Faraday instability patterns.
