Project Details
Description
The proposed project aims to unite academics from the University of Hertfordshire and Lancaster University to develop a significant research bid focused on maternal separation, building on the impactful Lost Mothers project. This previous initiative explored the compulsory separation of women in prison from their babies, revealing the profound emotional and psychological effects of such separations. By leveraging insights gained from Lost Mothers, this new collaboration seeks to broaden the understanding of maternal separation to include safeguarding scenarios beyond prison settings.
At the University of Hertfordshire, researchers are dedicated to addressing the complex challenges faced by mothers and their infants during separation. Lancaster University’s Centre for Child and Family Justice Research has been at the forefront of addressing the challenges faced by mothers and babies who are separated due to safeguarding concerns. Developed from Lancaster’s Born into Care research programme, The HOPE (Hold On Pain Eases) Boxes initiative, led by Claire Mason, exemplifies this effort. Together, we will explore evidence-based interventions that can be implemented nationally, enhancing support for mothers and babies during these critical times. Our collaboration will not only build on the successes of the Lost Mothers project but also contribute to improving policies and practices that affect vulnerable families. The ultimate goal is to develop new, evidence-based interventions that can be implemented nationwide, supporting mothers and babies during these profoundly challenging times. Through this partnership, we aim to build on our previous work and contribute to improving policies and practices that affect vulnerable families.
