Description
Ceramic matrix composites are a lightweight (1/3rd weight of metals) material choice for high-temperature applications (>1100 oC). Until now, they have been limited to extremely high-value applications, such as aerospace components, due to the high material cost. Creating a cost-effective CMC solution for a temperature between 350-1100 oC would unlock several applications which have previously deemed CMCs too expensive. The applications include automotive battery casings (also useful in the defence sector), FST materials for construction, and heat shields for the automotive industry.
