Description

PhD Project
Visible light technology (VLC) is emerging as promising candidate for providing simultaneously light and communications. The advances in light emitting diodes (LEDs) technologies and the inquest of making use of broadband spectrum bring the innovation of VLC technology offering cost-effective high-speed network solutions. Various applications can be identified making simultaneous use of illumination and communication, mostly indoor/outdoor data communication, information and sensing networks, specific security and alarm networks. The focus of this project is a study the optimised use of VLC technology for simultaneous communication and illumination whilst achieving high data rates transmission. The main disadvantage of traditional Wi-Fi network is the inter-channel interference for multiple devices, however the Li-Fi uses simultaneous multiple channels without interference and thus can have several fold better results than Wi-Fi. Since VLC uses the light from the ceiling lamps/LEDs hence it is considered as economical and sustainable business for electronic and manufacturing industries.
The main objectives of this project are:
• Modelling the System requirements for VLC communication
• Experimental demonstration identifying suitable modulation techniques and link performance issues in noisy channels
• Develop networking protocols to study design and performance analysis related issues
• Interfacing smart convergent mobile devices with VLC for indoor and outdoor applications

Layman's description

Wi-Fi is in everyday use but we have serious issues with Wi-Fi when it comes to uploading and downloading limits. Another alternative technology is Li-fi (light-fidelity) that is based on Visual Light Communication (VLC) fundamentals. Simply it uses the light (i.e. from the ceiling lamps/LEDs) without affecting the visibility. Hence with no additional cost one can have free yet powerful replacement of Wi-Fi. The VLC works similar to wireless systems and networks.
The project is required to cover important aspects and issues with the product and services related to VLCs. (i.e. prototype product development and its performance analysis under different scenarios, Identifying rules and regulation (i.e. protocols) for practical development applications). For example; how this technology will work saving energy and still guaranteeing the high speeds data transfer (i.e. watching/ downloading movies, playing online games, file share etc).

Key findings

• Design and Analysis of networking protocols for VLC to optimise handover mechanism for high-speed data transfer
• Optimising distance and inter-channel cross-talk in VLC
• Brighter spaces, VLC and IoT: 3in1 product development and services
