Re-thinking housing design in the UK

The current housing crisis and the resulting need for houses often clash with the sustainable development of cities and towns and the reach of net zero. UK cities have grown following the model of the “Big Village”, a low-density development, made of houses, that generates urban sprawl and that nowadays relies on the use of private transportation, misses the sense of community and exceeds the land use. A model that is no longer sustainable. The wider society needs to understand and take the lead in a new way of designing and building houses. Such change will have a big impact on everyone's life and for this reason, the process needs to be shared and reach the wider public available. In this context academia will have the role to push this change over its natural boundaries, helping the stakeholders to trace a scenario where density and proximity will reduce the carbon emission related to transportation, construction and heating, and achieve better land use.
