Description
The Black Women Research Collective (BWRC) is a peer-led initiative creating an inclusive, supportive, and action-oriented space for Black women across the University of Hertfordshire, including those in academic, professional, technical, research, and support roles. The collective aims to strengthen research confidence, share lived experiences, and shape pathways for progression and leadership.
While the BWRC is distinct from the 100 Black Women Professors WHEN Programme, launching in January 2026, it aligns closely with its objectives of advancing equity, representation, and career development for Black women. The BWRC complements this work by providing a university-wide forum focused on peer support, research development, and institutional reflection.
This initiative supports UH’s strategic commitment to fostering an inclusive research culture and contributes to the goal of increasing the number of Black female professors by 2030.

Layman's description
The Black Women Research Collective (BWRC) is a group run by and for Black women at the University of Hertfordshire. It’s a welcoming and supportive space where Black women in all kinds of roles, academic, professional, technical, research, and support, can connect, share experiences, and build confidence in their research. The group also helps members explore ways to grow into leadership roles.
Although the BWRC is separate from the 100 Black Women Professors WHEN Programme (which starts in January 2026), both share the same goals: improving fairness, visibility, and career opportunities for Black women. The BWRC adds to this by creating a community within the university that focuses on peer support, research development, and learning from each other’s experiences.
Overall, this initiative helps the university promote a more inclusive research culture and supports its aim to increase the number of Black female professors by 2030
