Description
This will be an exhibition of archival photographs of the allied interventions in the Russian civil war 1918-c1922/23, a largely 'forgotten' war.
Layman's description
The Armistice of November 1918 appeared to mark the end of the 'war to end all wars'. Yet, it is little known that some allied soldiers and airmen from many nations nevertheless continued to be engaged in warfare overseas until 1922/23. The location was Russia, and the function of these forces was to support the opponents of the Bolshevik Revolution of October 1917, the 'Whites'.
Their actions were ultimately unsuccessful. The forces of the Revolutionary government prevailed and the allied troops and air squadrons were forced to retreat and return home. Hence, perhaps, the Allied War of Intervention does not have a prominent place in school textbooks, and generalised discourse about the First World War. In this respect it is a forgotten war.
The proposed exhibition of archival photographs of the allied interventions in the Russian civil war 1918-c1922/23 seeks to reinstate the war of intervention on the public historical map.
