The Potato Revolution: Telling the Story of the Women who inspired the Swedish Hunger Uprisings of 1917

Following successful screenings in Finland and northern Sweden – including at the XVI Nordic Labour History Conference 2025, a UNESCO World Heritage farm, two museums, and Umeå University – our AHRC IAA-funded documentary has gained strong organic momentum, with growing demand across Sweden. Audience response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many encountering this overlooked First World War women’s story for the first time. In Finland, some viewers were deeply moved, with one researcher now revising her approach to Finnish-American women’s wartime history.
In Sweden, the film received national attention through a live radio broadcast, and Umeå University will include it in a course on food poverty. With new screening requests from across Sweden, this application seeks follow-on funding to expand the film’s reach and continue amplifying this neglected narrative – ensuring it informs, educates, and inspires a broader audience.
