Project Details
Description
Leather is one of the oldest industries in Bangladesh. Exporting 10 per cent of the global demand for leather, Bangladesh’s leather industry has become the country’s second-largest source of foreign exchange after RMG. However, as the export of leather declines year on year, the leather industry in Bangladesh continues to fail to address environmental concerns. It is one of the most energy-intensive industries in Bangladesh, creating ecotoxicity through air and water pollution, and solid waste. The project aims to create digitalised traceability and environmental footprint calculation technologies, which are not yet present in Bangladesh. Policy recommendations will be developed based on project learnings and pilot results to facilitate the adoption of e-traceability technologies in the Bangladeshi tannery and leather industries.
