Project Details

Description

School non-attendance is an increasing issue in the UK and across the world.
An audit by the Children’s Commissioner (2022) estimates that 1.7 million pupils in England were persistently absent (missing over 10% of school sessions) and 124,000 pupils were severely absent (missing over 50%) of school sessions in the Autumn 2021 term. There is currently a lack of consensus about how to define school non-attendance and terms such as school phobia, school refusal behaviour and school avoidance among others are used interchangeably.

Project Activity
The following activities are underway:

1. A scoping review to investigate the definitions of school non-attendance and examine the evidence outlining the factors contributing to why children do not attend school
2. A qualitative study to understand perspectives of parents/carers whose child/children regularly do not attend school
