A critical review of the Paralympic Games’ potential to increase disabled people’s sport participation

Abstract

This chapter critically examines the potential of the Paralympic Games to boost sports participation among disabled people. It finds limited evidence supporting the idea that the Games significantly increase grassroots participation. The chapter suggests that, while the Paralympics can raise awareness and inspire some individuals, broader and more inclusive initiatives are needed to achieve substantial and lasting increases in participation levels among disabled people.
